I received the following from Rue Cromwell (LHS Class of '46): "Bud was either quarterback or running back on the football team. During a big trophy-winning season I recall a special moment with a very tough season when we were behind near the end of the game and with only one down left and we were at the five yard line of the opposing team. Bud had been injured but he had been put back in the game because he wanted to and because coach Williams knew he was the only person to do the job. He took the ball and went through the center of the line the total five yards to make a touchdown. A last minute victory. He was in tears from the pain. After the game it was determined that he had a broken bone in his ankle and had essentially made this play with a broken ankle. He openly confessed to the tears of pain. He was not without help. The offensive line, that involved Frank, Hunk Richardson, and others, blocked people and made a hole for him to get through all the way to the goal line. It was an heroic moment that all the team and the student fans recognized as having unusual courage. This is my memory from decades ago, and you are the only one to hear my story. If you encounter any of Bud's kids or grandkids, feel free to pass it on. Finally, I am also touched once again by the magnet that draws so many people back to Linton, not only to visit but to have Linton as a final resting place. It is a very special place." Along with these words from Rue, I send my condolences. --- Polly

Please accept my deepest sympathies to the entire family. My heart goes out to families when they lose their older ones. My mom was 97 and I remember the sting so I know how your hearts must be pained at this time. There is a place in the Bible I feel will give you great comfort. I know it did me. It is at John 11:11-44 where Jesus resurrects his dear friend Lazarus. Please read it and see at first the pain the family and friends, and even Jesus, feels at the death of Lazarus. But then take note of the joy when Jesus brings Lazarus out of his death "sleep". When Bud is reunited with the family "on the last day" (verse 24), you will all have your sad tears turned into tears of great joy. Jesus knows your pain and he is eager to give Bud life again. Until the Great Time Keeper Jehovah God gives his Son, Jesus, the signal to bring our dead loved ones back, may the peace of God soothe your sad hearts and get you through the coming days with the hope that will never disappoint you.
