Maxine Louise Payne, née Jones, 82 of Perryville, Mo., formally DeSoto, Mo. died Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Southeast Health Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

She was born Wednesday, April 27, 1938 in Doniphan, Mo. in Ripley County to James “Fielding” Jones and Rosa Gladys (Hatfield) Jones. She was the fourth of five children. Following the death of her parents, she was raised by her grandmother, Myrtle May Hatfield.

Maxine married Elice “Austin” Payne on July 20, 1953. Together they were the proud parents of nine children. He preceded her in death on June 26, 2000.

Maxine held several jobs outside the home, but the most important to her was as a homemaker, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, CareGiver to many and Friend.

Maxine was an amazing women and mother. We love and appreciate her so much! Thank you for all the years of nurturing us, loving us, encouraging us, teaching us, training us, doing hard things with us, laughing and crying with us, showing us the value of life and serving others, and just being you. You are a gift and a treasure. We are so thankful for you and your values, Family, Faith & Love. She was a member of Primrose Baptist Church in Bonne Terre, Mo.

She is survived by her Sister – Rosa Violet (Jones) Steen of Ferguson, MO; Sister-in-Law – Carol Sue (McGinnis) Jones of Bellefontaine, OH; eight Children – Brenda (Dean) Hendrix of Perryville, MO, Vernon (Nancy Ackman) Payne of Perryville, MO, Sandra Hearn of Arnold, MO, Patricia (Joseph) Smith of DeSoto, MO, Pamela (Randall) Chilton of Pevely, MO, Harold “Wayne” Payne of Hillsboro, MO, Kevin Payne Sr., of Hillsboro, MO, Dana (Roger) Barrentine of Hillsboro, Mo; Twelve Grandchildren – Melissa (Brian) Riggs, Shawn Sanderson, Aaron (Jaclyn Penfield) Payne, Andrena (Amos Petrie) Olsen, Kevin “PJ” Payne Jr, Brittney Richards, Candice (Eric Reupke) Smith, Rachael (Jeffery Davis) Chilton, Ashlynn ( Kyle Ostrowski) Payne, Samantha Barrentine, Landry Barrentine, Bobby Barrentine; Ten Great Grandchildren, Ashleigh Chester, Jeffrey “AJ” Bibb, Kobe Petrie, Rickey McKee, Ethan Olsen, Dannalei Petrie, Kaden Olsen, Everett May, Asher Petrie, Jasper Davis; she is preceded in death by her Husband – Elice Austin Payne. 06/26/2000; Son – James Darryl Payne 09/06/1960;
Grandson – Gabriel Smith 01/16/2000; Brother and Sister-in-Law – James Edward (Geraldine) Jones, Sister and Brother-in-Law – Myrtle Ann (Leonard Eugene) Brown, Brother-in-Law – Howard “Junior” Steen, and one Brother – Junior Leroy Jones; Parents – Rosa Gladys (Hatfield) Jones, James “Fielding” Jones; Grand Parents – Cyrus Hatfield & Myrtle May (Curl) Hatfield, and James W Jones & Mary Ann (Hoover) Jones-Georger.
