Joan (nee Bequette) McCurdy was born September 18, 1936 in De Soto, Missouri.  She was the second daughter of Kathryn (nee Hoyt) and Thomas James Bequette. She died on July 24, 2022 at the age of 85 in the care of hospice at Crystal Oaks Assisted Living Center in Festus, Missouri.  She is predeceased by her husband of 63 years at the time of his death in 2019, Gerald Ray McCurdy, her brother David Bequette, and sisters LaVera Sorum and Mary Leftridge. Joan is survived by her daughter Karen, her son Karl, grandson Douglas Ray (Amy) McCurdy, granddaughter Gennevieve LeFevre Wright, and great-grandchildren Lucas, Adalyn, and Carter, as well as her brother James Bequette, and former in-laws Cherie McCurdy and Ronald Wright. Numerous cousins brothers and sisters in-law, friends, nieces and nephews also survive her.  Joan was a proud alumna of St. Rose of Lima School and the De Soto High School class of 1954 where she served as student body president and valedictorian.  Her marriage took her around the country with Jerry’s jobs, first with the U.S. Army to Aberdeen, Maryland and Fayetteville, North Carolina.  Later with American Telephone & Telegraph they lived in Pleasant Hill, California; Littleton, Colorado; and Ironton and Randolph, New Jersey before retirement and returning to De Soto.  While her children were in school, Joan was the bookkeeper at Christ the King Catholic Church in Pleasant Hill, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Littleton.  In New Jersey she was employed full time at AT&T International for ten years.  In retirement Joan devoted her time to St. Rose of Lima church and school, especially with her years on Church Council and in coordinating the diocesan appeal.  She enjoyed maintaining contacts with her friends from all the towns and cities in her life, playing bridge, and going to the movies.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Rose of Lima School, 504 S. 3rd St., De Soto, MO 63020 or Calvary Cemetery, P.O. Box 222, De Soto, MO 63020.
