Herman was a friend of mine from our earliest days in grade school. I can still recall playing ball in the flat down behind his house on Donnelly (always being careful the ball didn't bounce over the fence into the neighbor's garden). He threw with his right but batted left. Later we'd all ride bicycles around the neighborhood and Herman's bike needed a paint job. My Dad offered to paint Herman's bike, which he did, in Herman's desired color of orange. In high school Herman decided to buy a motorcycle (I guess he had saved money from working at Conway's discount store out on 21). We picked up that silver 305 Scrambler over in Herky and rode together some. After high school I went away to college and Herman joined the Army, so we lost touch. Later, visiting him at his home on Donnelly and at a couple high school reunions we spoke a bit, but not too frequently. So, my most vivid memories of Herman are from over 50 years ago. And they are good memories. Rest in peace, Herman.
