The remains of Herbert John Hoard, Chief Storekeeper on the USS OKLAHOMA (BB-37) on December 7, 1941, were identified by DNA and other means. Elbert Hoard of Fayette, MO the oldest surviving relative (nephew) was notified by the U.S. Navy on March 23, 2016. Herbert was born in De Soto to William and Hattie Vinyard Hoard. He was preceded in death by his brother Homer; three brothers survived: Walter, Robert, and Roscoe Hoard all of which are now deceased.
Mr. Hoard is had a host of nieces and nephews and is survived by many of them and their families. Great-great nephew, Fr. Dylan Schrader will officiate the service. Burial will be at Victoria Cemetery, next to his parents. His remains will be flown from Hawaii to St. Louis, MO by the U.S. Navy then transported to De Soto, MO.
Herbert enlisted in the Navy October 25, 1923 in St. Louis, MO. Herbert served on the USS MISSISSIPPI (BB-41) and many other ships. He had a girlfriend he planned on marrying when his last tour was complete and he was discharged. He died on the USS OKLAHOMA (BB-37) at Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
