George Eugene Thornton was born in French Village on September 3, 1931 a son to William “Bunn” Thornton and Florence “Marie” (nee Askew) Thornton. He died on October 21, 2016 at The Villa’s in De Soto at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife of 37 years Bonnie Jo (nee Lowry) Thornton; six children: Jeff (Darla) Thornton, Seguin, TX, Georgeann (Mike) Nitzband, New Braunfels, TX, Jim (Barb) Thornton, Kingsbury, TX, Missy (Dave) Doss, Seguin, TX, Joe (Dee Dee) Thornton, Seguin, TX, and Donna (Gary) Deharde, Seguin, TX; four step-children: Raymond Bourbon, De Soto, John (Mickie) Bourbon, Hillsboro, Tina Bourbon, De Soto, and Jake Bourbon, Hillsboro; and one sister: Helen Cummings, Walnut Shade, MO. George was a beloved grandfather, especially to Tiffany Bourbon Portell, and great-grandfather. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Shirlene (nee Bess) Thornton; one step-son: Billy Bourbon; two sisters: Jane Ates and Hazel Thornton, and five brothers: Jack, Jesse, Bill, Bert, and Burl Thornton. George served in the United States Air Force from Nov. 19, 1951 to Nov. 17, 1961. All of his brothers also served in a branch of the military having a combined family time of service of 72 years. He retired from the Doe Run Company as a Blast Furnace Foreman. Mr. Thornton’s family would like to express their gratitude to Safe Harbor Hospice and the staff at the Villa’s and also Fountainbleau Nursing Centers for all their kindness.
