Carl Edwin Olson, 90, died Dec. 27, 2009, at Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia, OH.  He was born May 1, 1919, in De Soto, MO the oldest of 3 children born to the late Maude A. (McKee) and George Olson. He graduated from De Soto High School where he participated in debate and Speech Club.  After working a year to save for college expenses, Carl went to Anderson College (now Anderson University).  There he met his future wife, June Cima.  His college education was interrupted by the draft and he served as a conscientious objector, first for 5 months in soil conservation in Merom, Indiana and later for 4 years at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Chicago. Carl and June (Cima) were married December 17, 1944, celebrating 63 years of marriage just prior to her death in 2008.  To their union was born five daughters — Carol Lynne (Jim) Usher of Xenia, OH; Nancy (John) Howard of Camrose, AB, Canada; Sharon (Sam) Collins of Anderson, IN; Jeanne (Steve) Quam of Anderson, SC; and Mona (Rod) Carroll of Kokomo, IN.  In 1946 Carl returned to De Soto where he worked with his family in the operation of a baby chick hatchery and poultry farm until his retirement.   He belonged to the Missouri Poultry Improvement Association, serving one term on the board.  Active in the community, Carl served as treasurer of the De Soto Civic Improvement League which successfully promoted the change to the City Manager form of government.  He served on the De Soto Community School Board for 6 years, including a term as Treasurer and a term as President.  Carl, a committed follower of Jesus Christ, attended the Church of God wherever he lived.  In De Soto he served in many congregational leadership roles.  He was honored in 2001 for 50+ years of service to the Christian Education Department.  Carl was also active in state leadership for the church, including the development and operation of Camp Sharon on the Lake of the Ozarks and Men of the Church of God.  He was a member of Gideons International since 1986. Due to health problems, Carl and his wife moved to Xenia, Ohio in 2003 to live with his daughter Carol Lynne and Jim Usher. Carl is survived by his five daughters and their spouses, 11 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren.  Also surviving are his siblings: Blaine (Betty) Olson of De Soto, MO; Geri (Robert) Dial of Plymouth, MI; in-laws: Mary (Walter) Miller of Anderson, IN; Norman (Phyllis) Cima of Menlo Park, CA; and Dru Bose of Indianapolis, IN; 6 nephews, 4 nieces, and a host of friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at A House of Prayer (AHOP), 356 Home Avenue, Xenia, OH, on Friday, January 1, 2009 with visitation beginning at 11:00 AM and service at 1:00 PM, arranged by Herr-Riggs Funeral Home of Middletown, OH, and also in De Soto, MO at the Dietrich Funeral Home on Sunday, January 3, 2009 with visitation beginning at 1:30 PM. and service at 2:30 PM, with private interment in Woodlawn Cemetery in De Soto. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Peace and Conflict Transformation Endowment (Anderson University, 1100 E. 5th Street, Anderson, IN 46012), the First Church of God (300 West Mineral Street, De Soto, MO 63020), Gideons International, or the charity of your choice.
