James C. Culwell was born April 20, 1908, in Vandalia, MO, a son to Herman Joseph and Maggie (nee Bell) Culwell and grew up on the family farm. He died November 29, 2006, in Littleton, CO, at the age of 98. Survivors include two sons, Don (Debbie) Culwell, Conway, AR, and Gene (Joyce) Culwell, Denver, CO, and one step-son, Monroe (Kim) Mountford of Festus, MO. Grandchildren: Andrea (Jamie) Hill, Kevin (Christa) Culwell, Jeff (Joelle) Culwell, Jonathan and Jennifer Culwell. Step-grandchildren: Capt. John (Amanda) Mountford, Alex (Mark) Mahn, Mark (Jennifer) Mountford, and Meda (Michael) Kaspar. Great grandchildren: Hailey Wilson, Caitlyn and Matt Hill, Madeline, Emma, and Joshua Culwell. Step-great grandchildren: Meredith and Michaela Kaspar, Conner and Grant Mahn and Abigail and James Mountford. He was preceded in death by his parents and three wives: Erna (nee Seemel) Culwell, Leiland (nee Stamps) Culwell, and Genevieve (nee Edmonds) Mountford Culwell; Two brothers, Joseph and Raymond Culwell, one sister Anna Maxwell; One grandson, James Culwell; One step-son, Metford (Mary) Mountford. Mr. Culwell retired as principal of De Soto High School in 1973 after 38 years of service to the district. He built 55 homes in De Soto until he stopped carpentry at age 90, and was a member of De Soto Rotary Club and Redeemer Lutheran Church.
