David Clayton Long was born April 16, 1924 in rural Hillsboro (Ware Road) a son to Claude and Gertrude Pearl (nee Pounds) Long. He attended Luckey Elementary School, graduating in 1937 and De Soto High School graduating in 1941. He graduated from the United States Naval Hospital Corp School in 1943 and gained the rank of Hospital Apprentice First Class. Following being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945 he entered and graduated from St. Louis School of Electricity and Refrigeration. He then owned and operated Long Service, a refrigeration and air conditioning service, for more than 40 years serving De Soto, MO and the surrounding communities. He then was an adjunct instructor for refrigeration and air conditioning at Jefferson College, Hillsboro, MO. He was a member of De Soto Community Church of God, the Operating Engineers, I.B.E.W., and AmVets Post #48.He is survived by his sons: David Long, Aurora, MO, Bill “B.J.” (Gina) Johnston, Osage Beach, and Barry (Susan) Johnston, Wildwood; grandchildren: Meaghen (Chris) Schofield, Mallory Long, Ryan (Katie) Johnston, Andrew “Drew” Johnston, and Tyler Johnston; great-grandchildren: Aiden, Oliver, and Ansel; and a sister-in-law: Margie Long, De Soto. He is preceded in death by his parents; two wives Christine (nee Warren) Long and Earline (nee Berry) Johnston-Long; and a brother Clyde Long. Rev. Ron Culp will officiate the funeral service.
