George Hampel Melkus of De Soto died on September 3, 2012 at his residence in De Soto, MO.  He was born on March 26, 1921 in Caruthersville, MO, and the son of the late Emil & Pearl (Hampel) Melkus.   

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Erna (Reynolds) Melkus of De Soto, MO; children, Wayne Melkus, Hillsboro, MO; Gail (Dusty) Obermeyer, Festus, MO; Gina (Bill “B.J.”) Johnston, Osage Beach, MO; grandchildren, Jeffrey (LeAnna) Obermeyer, Josh Obermeyer; Stacey (Craig) Block; and Todd (Jennifer) Melkus; great grandchildren, Shelby Block, Jillian Obermeyer, Abby Jo Obermeyer, and Mitchell Obermeyer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Louise (Justin) Knitting and Alice (Horliss) Gunther, and brother Ernest “Bud” (Rose) Melkus.  

He was a long time member of Pilgrims’ Rest Baptist Church.  He was a lifelong farmer and a mechanic for Jefferson County Highway Department for 30 years.  He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II for three years. 

As an expression of sympathy memorial donations may be made to the Pilgrim’s Rest Church Building Fund or Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery, 11441 Ware church Rd. Hillsboro, MO 63050.  Dave Evans and Bob Siebels will officiate the service.
